Why you get so much more light of a lamp diffuser which would be only a light bulb?

Is not it a quirk of physics? I mean, here it is, a small light bulb in hand - not much happening, and then put a diffuser or reflector behind it, and you get this great explosion of light. Does not that mean that light has increased, without additional energy input? That is impossible, however. What is happening there?

It is not an expert, but I'll try: You and @ steve are correct, the amount of lumens (measure of visible light "current") coming out of the lamp does not change. The small area of the bulb filament has a distribution of light, even light in all directions. Assuming that the ward is predominantly 'Black', with some reflections back to you, you see only what comes through the pupil, coming directly from the (almost) point sources. I'm too lazy to do the calculation, but you has not perhaps been> + 99.99% of the lumens emanating from the pollution source. The magic words in your question are "mirror" and "behind" point source: If you use a reflector for example, a white sheet of paper / cardboard with a typical Lambertian (cosine) redistribution, seeking factors the "amplification": one, most of the light sent to the back of the bulb (which had been lost anyway) is now redirected to you, or objects in the vicinity of the bulb.
