Technology has come a long way in recent years and has changed the method in which people compete movies. You can probably remember the days when people saw their home movies through your VCR. Of course, these VHS tapes were bulky, consumers lots of storage, and output image of much lower quality to do today with DVD and BD media emerging. LaserDiscs soon thereafter replaced VHS and VCD, but this was short duration when the DVD was introduced to the scene. DVD (Digital Versatile Disc) was, of course, far more advanced than VCD and stored six times more information.
A single DVD with a storage capacity of 4.7 GB can store an entire movie, as well as other behind the scene footage and other features additional. Because of this, DVD's have had a major impact on the film industry and as a result more people are buying DVD's to see their homes. The DVD however, may be replaced by a new technology that would further improve the film industry. This new technology is known as Blu-Ray.
Blu-Ray technology is considered the next-generation DVDs. Blu-ray or BD can record, store and are able to play more video, digital audio and computer data. BD also can store a full length high definition movie usually takes more bandwidth and space storage. Compared with the DVD. Blu-Ray has the advantage of the amount of information it can store. A single layer BD has the capacity to store 27 GB of information digital. This single-layer BD is sufficient for more than two hours of high definition video or for more than 13 hours of standard video. A double layer BD on the other party may be able to store over 4.5 hours of HD video due to its capacity of 50 GB of storage.
Laser lights are effectively how the storage media of optical discs (eg DVD and Blu-ray) are capable of reading the information, with Blu-ray discs that use blue-violet rays while DVD uses red ultraviolet rays. The amount of information that can be stored on discs depend on the light so large and the laser is necessary. Blue laser has a length wavelength smaller than the red laser and because of this, blue laser is more precise and can write information in much smaller spaces. This is why which much more information can be stored on a Blu-Ray.
A huge storage capacity is not the only advantage of Blu-Ray. Discs Blu-Ray also can transfer data at a higher rate. Blu-ray discs are so revolutionary, because they are capable of a data transfer rate of 36 Mbps (megabits per second), while a standard DVD can only transfer at a speed of 10 Mbps
Two technologies that is, Blu-ray and High Definition DVD (HD-DVD) are competing against each other to successfully become the official storage medium for the future of the media in high definition. Blu-Ray first used by Sony in its PlayStation 3 and therefore BD is becoming popular among studios giant such as Warner Brothers film, who have stated that will only release their movies in high definition formats BD from May 2008.
