What exactly is a black box theater? (please read first)?
My high school is getting renewals, and renewal in these programs our theater is losing 1500 square feet of space and be pushed into a clasroom and Cafetorium. A group of our going to speak at the table in the meeting this week to try to convince the school board to give us at least what we have, preferably more. One of the parents by email to the Board to complain, and suggested that you get a black box theater. The Board responded that it is building a black box theater. So assuming we have a misconseption of what exactly a picture is black. My question is, can anyone find a reliable source on what exactly is a black box and / or suggestions on the sizes and equipment. If we are to them with information from Wikipedia, will laugh or expensive. Thanks for your help saving our theater.
Oh my Lord, that's horrible! Hope this helps. Black-Box: A black box theater, a space where they are building or any permanent phase-in seating area. The stage and the audience can be configured in about, thrust, or style the proscenium, depending on what the director wants. This kind of theater gives you complete control to each director and designer, allowing them to decide which configuration best tell their story. This flexible theater style became popular in the late 20th century. Black-box theater can also be built within existing buildings such as warehouses, or even in your own garage at home (with a copy of my source, as listed below). So that's probably how the Board defines black-box. I understand how may think differently, however, because not my definition of a good. I imagine a black box theater as a theater of smaller college, with seating around three sides and a stage in the center, the walls and the floor is usually black. In my school, we have a smaller theater (about 175 seats) with chairs stadium. It's like a regular theater with a wooden stage and great acoustics. If I were you, I will refrain from using the term black-box, if the term is defined not what I had in mind. Be specific about what you want and make sure you explain how it would benefit the school.
